There are total 103 private universities in Bangladesh as per university grants commission of Bangladesh. After 1992 the enactment of Private University Act, The country had a great experience of remarkable development in private higher educational institutes.  There are numbers of education institutes also providing Graduation diploma and foreign universities diploma and online HND program and other professional short courses.

As per the World Bank report, there are over 1 million students enrol each year in universities for the higher degree program. Why private universities charge more than the government universities?

The public university is fully funded by government and private university entirely depend on student tuition fees, despite, the private universities charging more where it’s supposed to be much less costly in terms of Bangladesh. As we have previously categorized the university like A, B and C.  The average tuition fees in the universities like North-south, East West, BRAC, IUB and AIUB  charging near 12 to 13 lac BDT ($16000 to $17000) for the bachelor and 3 top 4 lac ( $4000 to $5000) for the master’s courses.  These are the top highest tuition fees universities in Bangladesh whereas the other universities started from 4 to 6 lac BDT ($4000 to $5000) for the same courses.

Apart from the academic fees and other fees a student total of 4 years, Bachelor degree costs a little extra 2 or 3 lac BDT ($3000).

Foreign degree in compare with Bangladeshi private university degree programs

There are many EU countries offering free education ion higher studies. Countries like Germany, China, Austria and Norway providing any degree program at full free tuition fees where in Bangladesh no public and the private university has such an opportunity for its students.

A foreign degree is well appreciated in Bangladesh rather than its own universities. The trend to moving abroad from Bangladesh for higher study is increasing day by day. In the other hand, low-cost universities degree from Bangladesh are rejected by many foreign universities in terms of admission purpose.


As our population growing much higher and the demand of work placement for the graduate is tremendously raising high, Business and other organizations failed to meet that huge pool. It is very, unfortunately, though a graduate invests more than $100000 on this Graduation sadly they are not well treated by salary and job application board.

In the context of a large amount of expansion of the countries secondary and higher secondary sector, a considerable demand have been creating for the tertiary level. The few private universities cannot meet this demand, and for that reason, lots of students are going abroad every year, where we are losing talent. On the other side, maintaining quality is becoming a vital issue in changing global scenario as it’s discussed above. It is undeniable that private universities are contributing to meet the growing demand. But it’s only a few are ensuring the regional or global level of standard. The inadequate infrastructure facilities, inefficient and inexperienced low-quality teaching staff with the profit motive of founders put the sub-sector in a critical situation. Even the private universities founders are not willing to abide by the related Act or Guidelines. As an apex body, UGC cannot fight against irregularities with weak legal strength and logistics. But we have to move forward. A new Act with the consultation of stakeholders is immensely needed for this sector. Another positive initiative has been taken by UGC recently. A project starts to enhance HEQ of Public and Private sector institutions. This project will support universities to improve

Teaching-learning quality in undergraduate and master’s level. It also provides the fund for the improvement of research capabilities for post-graduate programs, it also has a component to recognize academic innovations for improving resources for lab, library and other related fields.
